6 days | Small group tour | Dec | Levi

There is a moment on this holiday your children will hold onto: the walk to Santa's cabin, deep in the forest, where the family is shown in for a private visit and every child leaves with a gift. Christmas in Levi is built around moments like that, unhurried, personal, and set in real Lapland wilderness rather than a theme park.

Over six days, you settle into your own log cabin, with a fire to light, a sauna, and forest at the door. Days are spent outside: driving a husky team through the trees, gliding out on a reindeer sleigh with hot drinks by an open fire, riding a snowmobile across snow-covered forest and dropping a line through the ice to fish. There is a day at the Elves' Village too, gingerbread to bake, crafts to make, before the visit to Santa himself on Christmas Day.

The pace leaves room to breathe. Afternoons are often free, so you can take to Levi's ski slopes, wander the village, or simply stay by the fire. Breakfast is yours to enjoy in the cabin each morning, and your evening meals are at hand-picked local restaurants. Levi lies well north of the Arctic Circle, with skies dark enough that the Northern Lights may appear on a clear night. A 50 Degrees North Tour Leader travels with your small group throughout, working alongside local guides so the days run smoothly and you are free to enjoy them.

Day 1 - Arrive in Lapland and transfer to your log cabin

Arrive at the airport and transfer to your log cabin. There is time to settle in: light the fire, make a cup of tea and let the children build their first snowman. You can also decorate the Christmas tree on arrival (optional add-on).

In the evening, meet your fellow travellers at a welcome dinner in a glass-roofed igloo restaurant. Before or after dinner, your Tour Leader will walk you to the local supermarket to buy breakfast supplies for your cabin, so you can enjoy a relaxed breakfast with your family each morning before the day's activities.

With no light pollution and little noise, the first evening is a good introduction to the Arctic night: the quiet of the wilderness, the night sky and, if the skies are clear, the Northern Lights.

Day 2 - Snowmobile Safari with ice fishing

Today you ride a snowmobile through snow-covered forest. Before setting off you will change into winter safari gear and receive full instruction on driving and safety, along with the basics of ice fishing.

After the ride, lunch is served at the Hotel K5 Levi restaurant. The afternoon is then free, you might take to the ski slopes, go horse riding in the forest, try ice go-karting, or do some Christmas shopping. The evening is also free, so your family can spend Christmas Day evening in its own way.

Day 3 - Husky Ride at the Husky Farm, Reindeer Ride and lunch around an open fire

After a relaxed breakfast in your cabin, the day begins with the huskies. A safety briefing first, then you head out into the forest, one of you driving the team, the other seated in the sledge, with a chance to swap partway. This is the day people tend to remember: the quiet once the dogs settle into the trail, and the winter scenery of Levi opening up around you. Afterwards, warm up with hot drinks around a fire before a reindeer ride and lunch at the farm.

Day 4 - Visit Santa in his private Santa cabin in the forest and Christmas Dinner

Merry Christmas. Today you spend time at the Elves' Village, where there is plenty for families to do: sledding down the snowy slope, a game of elf football, baking gingerbread and making Christmas crafts. The heart of the day is meeting Santa himself, stepping inside his home for a proper conversation and the kind of moment children hold onto.

There is more to the village than the meeting with Santa. A forest path links the Elves' Hideaway, the Bear Chair and the Seita Stone, with traditional touches such as gold panning and a sauna, and animals to meet along the way. Santa's vehicles and the Elves' Homes Museum are worth a look too, with small surprises at most turns.

This evening, gather for Christmas dinner at a local restaurant.
