Århus

Northern Coastal town known as the 'design' capital of Denmark

Founded by the Vikings in the 8th Century, Århus is the second largest city in Denmark. It has a creative heart and is a vibrant student town. It sits on a harbour with a river running through town. This river bank becomes the focus of cafes and restaurants, crammed into the centre of town. Århus is home to world-class dining, art and museums and the attractions for those with these interests are endless.

The city has two 13th century cathedrals, an open air museum - Den Gamle By (The Old Town) - that dates from the 15th century, the indoor/outdoor Moesgaard Prehistoric Museum, set in a 250-acre forest south of town, and the art museum ARoS located in the centre of Aarhus (in the conference area).

Århus sits on the eastern edge of the Jylland (Jutland) peninsula, the only part of Denmark attached to mainland Europe.

Interesting annual event, The Viking Moot:

Vikings from all over the world meet at the Viking Moot to recreate the festive markets held in the early days of Aarhus. The market stalls offer a wealth of interesting articles, and craftsmen produce fine items of iron, wood, leather, silver, wool, amber, glass, willow, and many other materials.

The Viking Moot at Moesgård Beach is an annual event, which takes place on the last weekend in July - the weekend closest to July 29, the feast day of St. Olaf. In the Middle Ages and probably in the Viking Age too, this day was a fair day in Aarhus.

Activities for every taste

Visitors can try their skills at different activities. Archery is especially popular, and here children and adults compete for the best result. However, there are activities for every taste, and all age groups can take part.

Highlights of the Viking Moot
The highlights of the Viking Moot are the combating warriors and fierce horsemen, who show their skills on Saturday and Sunday at twelve and three o'clock. The warriors cross swords in formidable battles, incited by a cheering crowd. Horsemen on Icelandic horses ride in procession, and the most daring plunge into wild rides.
