Lofoten Islands bike touring

Take a moment to google search Lofoten Island images and see why we are so excited!

Visiting Lofoten? Add independent cycling touring from fishing village to fishing village with a backdrop of soaring peaks, picturesque villages and a sandy coastline. If this doesn’t excite you, you need to do some Google image searches on the Lofoten Islands Archipelago. This narrow chain of islands crams in more mountains per square mile than any other part of Norway.

Highlights include:

  • Cycle sections between Svolvær to Reine
  • Visiting the Viking powerbase of the north Kabelvag
  • Taking a local bike ferry ride (Ballstad-Nusfjord) to avoid a long tunnel
  • Gentle and quiet roads
  • Breakfast & 2-course dinners included including lots of local seafood
  • 2 night stays in small fishing villages so there is no need to pack up each day

Jagged peaks sweep down to the sea leaving a narrow brim of coastal road with breathtaking views amid charming fishing villages simply perfect for cycling. Lofoten offers EASY riding (but it is now busy in the summer seasons on the main roads) - don't worry about cycling over these mountains.

For accommodation in the Lofoten we use quayside fishermen cottages called ‘rorbu’, which are perched on stilts above the water. Some of these fishermen cottages can be up to 1000 years old - they are loved part of the Lofoten Islands landscape. Dinner is most often included but some cottages also have small self-contained kitchens to make your trip more comfortable.

As well as riding in Lofoten, there are lots of free & fun activities on offer. Some of the rorbus provide small rowing boats so you can to try some fishing or you can get some tackle & fish from your veranda. Take a sauna or hot tub and optional fjord dip for an invigorating experience, Scandinavian style. Deep sea fishing, rib boating & kayaking can be added at a cost.

With long evening light, there are also lots of opportunities for ‘midnight’ walks for those with the energy after the cycling day. If you are a keen golfer, perhaps a round at the Lofoten Links will round out your holiday nicely.

The endless days and magical light long evenings of Northern Norway provide the setting for easy-going cycling touring.
