Where are the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights appear beneath the auroral oval, a ring of light centred on the Earth's geomagnetic north pole. (There is a matching oval in the southern hemisphere, producing the aurora australis.) In its quiet state, the oval sits on average around 67 to 68 degrees geomagnetic latitude, which takes in the northern parts of Norway, Sweden and Finland, Iceland, southern Greenland, and the far north of Russia, Canada and Alaska.

An important detail: the oval is centred on the geomagnetic pole, not the geographic one, and that pole currently sits over the Canadian Arctic. This gives North America an advantage: the lights can be seen from noticeably lower latitudes in Canada and Alaska than at the equivalent latitudes in Europe. It's also why Northern Scandinavia, sitting right under the European side of the oval, is such a reliable place to see them.

The aurora can appear well south of this band, and you may have heard of sightings in Scotland or northern England, but this only happens during periods of much stronger geomagnetic activity and can't be relied upon. The oval is constantly shifting, so a strong display over Swedish Lapland doesn't mean the same is happening in Iceland at that moment. Activity moves in waves across the region and can be tracked a few days out through space weather forecasts.

How do you read the aurora forecast?

Aurora activity is measured on the Kp index, a scale from 0 to 9 describing how disturbed the Earth's magnetic field is. The higher the Kp number, the further from the poles the lights can be seen. The useful thing for travellers is that in the Nordic north you don't need a high number: above the Arctic Circle the aurora can appear at Kp 1 to 2, which is among the most common levels of activity. How do you see the Northern Lights?

Three things matter more than anything else: darkness, clear skies, and looking in the right direction. Get well away from artificial light, and look toward the northern horizon, giving your eyes 15 to 20 minutes to adjust to the dark. The best window is usually around local magnetic midnight, roughly 10pm to 2am. It also pays to look through your phone camera now and then, as dim aurora often registers more brightly on a screen than to the naked eye. When is the Northern Lights season?

The aurora season in the Nordic north runs from roughly late September to late March, when the nights are long and dark enough for the lights to show. The aurora is present year round, but summer's midnight sun makes it impossible to see. The darkest months, December to February, give the longest viewing windows.

Are the Northern Lights guaranteed?

No, and it's worth being honest about that. The aurora is a natural phenomenon that depends on both solar activity and clear skies, so no tour can promise it. What improves your chances is time and place: several nights in a row, above the Arctic Circle, away from light, with the flexibility to move to clearer skies. Staying three to seven nights in the aurora zone under dark, clear conditions gives you a strong likelihood of seeing them.


How many nights should I stay to see them?

We'd suggest a minimum of three or four nights in the aurora zone, and ideally five to seven. Any single night can be clouded out, so more nights simply means more chances. This is why our aurora itineraries are built around multiple nights in the north rather than a single stop.


What's the best time of night to look?

Around local magnetic midnight, generally between 10pm and 2am, though displays can happen any time it's dark. Guides on our tours track conditions through the evening so you're out at the right moment.


Do I need a strong solar storm to see them?

Not in the far north. Because Northern Scandinavia sits directly under the auroral oval, the lights appear there even at low levels of activity. Strong solar storms are only needed to push the aurora further south, to places like the UK or central Europe. Being at 66°N and above is the single biggest advantage you can give yourself.


Where is better for the Northern Lights, Norway, Sweden, Finland or Iceland?

All four sit in or near the auroral zone, so the difference is more about landscape and weather than latitude. Finnish Lapland offers forest, glass igloos and reliable cold, clear winters. Swedish Lapland has the ICEHOTEL and Abisko, known for an unusually clear microclimate. Northern Norway combines the coast and mountains with the lights, though it can be cloudier. Iceland pairs the aurora with waterfalls, geothermal spas and dramatic scenery, but its maritime weather is more changeable. Many of our tours combine two or three of these.


Can you photograph the Northern Lights on a phone?

Yes, modern phones with a night mode capture the aurora well, often showing colour the eye can barely detect. Use night mode or a long exposure, brace the phone against something steady, and turn off the flash. A small tripod helps.


Will the moon or weather stop me seeing them?

Cloud is the main obstacle, since the aurora sits far above the weather and clear skies are essential. A bright moon won't hide a strong display but can wash out a faint one. This is why local guides and the flexibility to move matter so much on an aurora trip.
