MS Roald Amundsen

MS Roald Amundsen is one of Hurtigruten's purpose-built expedition ships, designed for exploring some of the world's most spectacular and remote destinations. Named after the legendary Norwegian polar explorer, she combines modern Scandinavian design with technology developed specifically for expedition travel in polar waters.

Launched in 2019, MS Roald Amundsen was one of the world's first cruise ships to feature hybrid-electric propulsion. The technology can reduce fuel consumption and emissions compared with conventional propulsion, while allowing the ship to operate more efficiently in sensitive environments.

The ship was designed as a sister ship to MS Fridtjof Nansen, with both vessels created to provide a comfortable base at sea while exploring remote destinations.

FACILITIES ON BOARD MS ROALD AMUNDSEN

One of the most distinctive features of MS Roald Amundsen is her two-level indoor and outdoor Observation Deck. It provides an excellent vantage point for watching wildlife, ice and dramatic landscapes as the ship travels through some of the world's most remote regions.

Behind the Observation Deck is the Amundsen Science Center, the heart of the onboard expedition experience. It includes lecture spaces, a small library and areas for workshops and activities, with large windows allowing guests to remain connected to the landscape outside.

The Science Center is also the base for the Hurtigruten Expedition Team. Throughout the voyage, the team shares knowledge about the destinations, wildlife, history, geology and science of the regions you explore.

The ship's interior uses Scandinavian-inspired materials and design, including granite, oak, birch and wool. Large windows and observation areas are designed to keep the surrounding landscape at the centre of the experience.

Dining on MS Roald Amundsen

MS Roald Amundsen has three restaurants inspired by Norwegian and Nordic traditions:

Aune is the main dining restaurant, named after Tinus Aune, a Norwegian ship chandler and supplier to polar expeditions.

Fredheim is the ship's informal restaurant and social meeting place, named after a former hunting station on Svalbard.

Lindstrøm is the specialty restaurant, named after Adolf Lindstrøm, the Norwegian chef who accompanied several polar expeditions.

The dining experience reflects Hurtigruten's focus on Norwegian and Nordic cuisine, alongside international dishes and local ingredients.

THE EXPEDITION EXPERIENCE

MS Roald Amundsen is designed around the idea of the ship as a comfortable base for exploration. Each expedition voyage is accompanied by an experienced Expedition Team who provide lectures, presentations, guiding and activities throughout the journey.

CABINS ON MS ROALD AMUNDSEN

MS Roald Amundsen offers several accommodation categories, from comfortable Polar Outside cabins to spacious Expedition Suites. Cabin size, location, facilities and sleeping arrangements vary between categories, so we recommend checking the specific cabin available for your voyage before booking.

Expedition Suite

Expedition Suites are the ship's most spacious cabins, with large windows and, in many cases, private balconies. Selected suites also have private outdoor hot tubs.

Suites feature comfortable seating areas and flexible sleeping arrangements, with amenities that can include a television, minibar, kettle, tea and coffee facilities, espresso maker, bathrobe and an amenity kit.

Some Expedition Suites can accommodate up to four passengers, depending on the configuration.

Suite w/balcony:

Suites with private balconies and large windows. Sizes and layouts vary, with flexible sleeping arrangements and selected suites offering additional seating space.

Corner Suite w/balcony:

Corner suites with private balconies and large windows. Selected aft corner suites feature a private outdoor hot tub.

Corner Suite:

Corner suites with large windows and views of the surrounding landscape.

Arctic Superior Cabins

Arctic Superior cabins provide comfortable outside accommodation, with most featuring balconies. These cabins offer flexible sleeping arrangements and can accommodate up to four passengers, depending on the cabin.

Amenities can include a television, kettle, tea and coffee facilities and an amenity kit.

Outside cabin w/balcony:

Spacious outside cabins on the higher decks with private balconies. Cabin sizes and layouts vary, with some offering sofa beds and flexible sleeping arrangements.

Accessible outside cabin w/balcony:

Selected accessible cabins feature a private balcony and are designed for guests with reduced mobility.

Outside cabin on lower/middle deck:

Larger outside cabins without balconies, located on the lower or middle decks. Depending on the cabin, flexible sleeping arrangements and sofa beds are available.

Polar Outside Cabins

Polar Outside cabins are comfortable outside cabins with windows or portholes, primarily located on the middle and lower decks.

Cabin sizes and layouts vary, with some offering flexible sleeping arrangements and sofa beds.

These cabins provide a comfortable base for your expedition while the ship's observation areas and public spaces give you plenty of opportunities to enjoy the scenery.
