5 days - Mountain Lodge and winter adventures under the Northern Lights

Just east of Tromsø lies the Lyngen Alps where you will stay in a traditional Norwegian timber lodge, Lyngen Lodge, beautifully situated on the fjord. This is a perfect and tranquil place to observe the Northern Lights, combined with daytime activities such as dog sledding, snowmobiling, sea safaris skiing, whale watching or snowshoeing. In-house Northern Lights photography assistance and a Northern Lights fact seminar enhance your understanding and experience.

With 8 en-suite bedrooms and a maximum of 16 guests, the lodge is the perfect place for a secluded, luxurious holiday with many guided adventures organised by owners Graham Austick and Elisabeth Braathen, both avid skiers and mountaineers. Personalised, exclusive experiences are complemented with great attention to detail from world-class food and roaring fires to candles, fresh flowers, and gorgeous fabrics.

One of our favourite and most popular lodges, Lyngen Lodge comes highly recommended by all 50 Degrees North travellers who have stayed here - availability is limited, so be quick!

Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive Tromsø and transfer to Lyngen Lodge

Lyngen Lodge sits in a natural forest clearing above a fjord with a striking mountain backdrop. High in the Arctic Circle, it's as remote a spot as you could hope to find, in Europe at least. It is a place to enjoy nature, dog sledding, skiing and other snow activities. Or you can just laze around with breathtaking views across the fjord and the Alps. And, if you're there from November to March, you can gasp at the northern lights.

Co-owner Graham Austick, who grew up in the north of England before defecting to St Anton to become a ski instructor and mountain guide, spotted the site when hiking through a nearby forest. He wanted to create a place which complemented rather than offended the nature around it, so he used a traditional Norwegian "lafting" pine timber frame with a thick grass roof, which also insulates the property.

Transfer from Tromsø in the late afternoon by mini bus. Dinner is served at 19.30, followed by Northern Lights presentation and photography tips.

Please note that these packages can be either 3 or 4 night stays - price differs accordingly.

Day 2 - Dogsledding through the winter wonderland

A leisurely breakfast between 8.00 - 10.00 then you head out on the first activity, dogsledding into the wilderness. After a scenic drive of 30 mins, you will reach the Reisa Valley and meet your dogsledding hosts. Meet the huskies and get changed into the warm outfits provided for this activity.

'Mush' your own team of dogs under the careful supervision and guidence of the professionals. Two guests per sled take turns in driving while following a guide in front. The trail winds through open valleys that capture the low Arctic sun between the high jagged peaks of the region. Half way round the trail lunch is cooked over an open fire in large tents.  Mid way through the afternoon, you will return to Lyngen Lodge for freshly baked cakes and afternoon tea.

Day 3 - Frozen Lakes Adventure on snow mobiles - Snow mobiling, ice-fishing and snow shoeing

Today's activity will focus on accessing the high mountain terrain via snowmobile. Once on the mountain plateau, you will experience ice fishing on the frozen lakes for mountain trout and visit spectacular view points over the Lyngen Alps. During this activity, you will be passengers on the snow mobiles.

The journey to the high lake via snowmobile takes 30 mins through snow covered birch tree forests. Once at the lake, a shelter camp is made and ice holes drilled through the ice so fishing can beging. The ice is so thick that it is possible to make a fire on the ice and cook the fresh fish directly at the camp! Cool!

Explore the surrounding area driving the snowmobiles in between fishing sessions.

Again, return back to Lyngen Lodge mid afternoon for a cup of tea or a champagne in the hot tub.

Day 4 - Cross country skiing, Sea Safari or Whale Watching into the Fjord

After breakfast, your final day at Lyngen Lodge can be spent cross country skiing, snow shoeing or you can pay an additional surcharge to head out into the Lyngen Fjord for a Sea Safari or Whale Watching.

You can enjoy machine groomed cross country ski trails through the valleys and forest of Djupvik, Rotsund or Storslett. Your guide will teach you the technique and assist you with the trails.

If you enjoy deep sea fishing and sea life spotting, opt in for a journey on the 'Spirit of Lyngen'. Weather dependent, of course. On this adventure, you can visit an ice cave, travel close to the sheer towering rock walls that plunge into the ocean and see the Havn Ørn, Europe's largest eagle, seen regularly hunting for fish. Whale Watching is new for 2024, running only between November and January. By February, the whales have moved on.
