4 days - Experience different yurt camping in luxury gers in Mongolia.

On these short journeys, you will travel to your 'gerscape' and spend time exploring the wilderness, meeting locals and being at one with the Mongolian landscape. On these journeys you will stay at low impact ger (yurt) camps. They are fully collapsible “lodges”, built in the nomadic style. These camps are put up for the summer season and packed away in winter, leaving no traces anywhere.

We use low-impact indigenous, thus appropriate, technology to offer lodging and sometimes also transportation with the assistance of yak carts or riding horses. Essentially, it means that we can be hosted by the services of the local people living in the area where we travel. There is an option – at additional cost - to camp out by building your own private base next to the river. Bring a yurt on a yak cart and erect it yourself with the help of your local hosts and a private cook.

We have a variety of different yurt camps that you can visit, all with a different focus,  i.e. near the Gobi Desert or further into the mountains & canyons of Mongolia.

These camps create perfect tailor made itineraries - combining comfortable accommodation, a variety of activities and wonderful Mongolia landscapes.

Day 1 - Travel to Ikh Nart Nature Reserve & settle into your Ger

Ikh Nart Natural Reserve (67,000 hectares) is a comfortable 6 hour train journey from Ulaanbaatar or a 5 hour transfer on tarmac. It is home to hundreds of ibex (mountain goats), black vultures and other wildlife.

We pick you up from your hotel in Ulaanbaatar in the morning and transfer to IkhNart Rocks Ger Camp directly by vehicle. We spend about six hours traveling southeast over the grassland, which gradually turns into more arid Gobi steppe. After arrival at the camp check-in to your ger and have free time to explore the surrounding area.

Ikh Nartiin Chuluu Nature Reserve is a community reserve where local people have partnered with the Denver Zoo Foundation & the Mongolian Academy of Sciences for research and the conservation of the Ikh Nartiin Chuluu Plateau. It is an upland with many rocky outcrops.

The unique wildlife feature of Ikh Nart is its approximately 1000 Argali sheep (Ovis ammon), the largest wild mountain sheep in the world. Although there is no guarantee, they are not that shy here. Also Mongolian gazelle (procapra gutturosa) are frequent visitors and are relatively easy to come across and view. Ikh Nartiin Chuluu, the full name, means, in Mongolian, "Rocks with plenty of sunshine". The reserve also has a sizeable population of the world's biggest vulture, the Cinereous vulture (Aegypius monacha), as well as some 200 Siberian ibex (Capra sibirica).

1 Dinner

Days 2 - 3 - IkhNart Rocks Ger Camp experience with hiking, biking and visiting the local wildlife research centre.

For the next two days, you can explore this nature park. Hiking is excellent and rewarding, with easy climbs on to the rocks, overlooking the amazing landscape. Mountain bikes, horses and camels are available for spontaneous rides with the help of local horsemen.

…or if you just want to sit back and relax. The camp is equipped with a library ger that includes a collection of books on Mongolian culture, history and people. There is a chess game and other fun stuff. Feel free to use the library ger at your own leisure.

The surroundings allow you to make hikes in any direction. Ask the cooks to pack your lunch and stray away among the rock formations for the day. If you prefer to make an excursion on two wheels, there are two mountain bikes at the camp. You may also explore the area. Hourly, half days and full day rides are organized with local horsemen. Ikh Nart is popular with bird watchers encountering many birds of prey, including Cinereous Vultures, Peregrine Falcons and especially Lesser Kestrels.

The cool evening sunsets over Gobi, glass of wine at hand, are pleasant and rewarding.

Your travel choice for Ikh Nartiin Chuluu will assist the conservation efforts in the area, as it bring finances to the local economy and protection efforts.

Important Information

Staff: A Mongolian English-speaking leader will accompany you at all times. In addition, the services of the local herdsmen will be hired along with their animals.

Riding skills: Complete horse riding novices should not attempt to ride individually on horses. However, the Mongols historically have been the most equestrian people on Earth, and remain so to this day. Anyone at ease with horses will enjoy riding.

Meals: Our cooks will prepare the meals. We pride ourselves in having cooks adept at both western and Mongolian cooking on our trips. There are always vegetables available, and we have no problem accommodating vegetarians. For breakfast we can usually buy fresh yogurt from the herdsmen in the local area.

Mongolia is the perfect place for a family adventure - simple days, lots of sunshine and fresh air & adventure. The camps are popular with families and you have the room to spread out and enjoy the Mongolian culture and outdoors. Please talk to us about Mongolia with your family.
