Thereafter, go for a leisurely walk and enjoy twilight along the colourful harbour Nyhavn with its celebratory feel and atmosphere.
Copenhagen has over the years become famous for its manifesto of New Nordic Cuisine. The city boasts 18 Michelin stars divided over 15 restaurants, and is home to the world's best restaurant, noma. The city is also abundant in everything from small cosy pub style eateries, cafes with great coffee and establishments serving world class local beer.
Copenhagen is a wonderful summer city with numerous city squares and patios where restaurants open up to the street. The city centre is pedestrian and bicycle friendly, which creates a peaceful and enjoyable atmosphere.
You will go on a private tour of Copenhagen, which can be tailor-made at your request. Visit the National Museum with your guide and get an insight into Denmark’s past. You'll see incomparable treasures such as Viking jewellery, coins, weapons and rune stones.
With your 48–hour Copenhagen card, you can then explore on your own by taking a canal tour, visiting the royal museum or you can go shopping for Scandinavian designs. Don't forget to stop for coffee and some lovely Danish bread/pastry from one of the many delicious bakeries.
You will pick up your hire car in the morning at the car hire office in the centre of town before setting off towards Roskilde with map and GPS in hand. Driving in Denmark is not daunting at all, but it is on the right-hand side of the road.
Drive to Roskilde (30 kilometres), not only home to the biggest festival in Denmark (Roskilde Festival) but also to the Viking Ship Museum. The Viking Ship Museum is located in the Roskilde Fjord and contains five reconstructed Viking longboats, built from salvaged wrecks from the Fjord itself.
Your accommodation this evening is a historic manor house, surrounded by a moat and lots of forest. Relax in the cozy living rooms, rent a bike or take a walk in the beautiful park.
Explore Roskilde and surrounds. We recommend visiting the Roskilde Cathedral, a landmark, where the notorious Viking king Harald Bluetooth was buried. Visit the Viking Ship Musuem where you can row a viking ship, dine like a Viking in the museum cafe and tast the local flatbread.
Head south from Roskilde (64 km from Roskilde to Slagelse) and you’ll arrive in Trelleborg, which is home to the impressive ring fortress surrounded by a 134-metre-diameter wall. Explore the site by walking around and visit the ancient archaeological finds in the museum, next to a reconstructed castle. The fortress was excavated 1934-42 and revealed 31 houses and thousands of artefacts as well as the remains of the large, circular-shaped fortress.
In the summer period on certain days, you can enjoy a terrific Viking market. Be sure to plan ahead and include it on your itinerary.
From Slagelse near Trelleborg, drive west over the Great Belt Bridge (Storebæltsbroen) to the island of Funen (Fyn). South of the town Kerteminde, you’ll find Ladby Viking Museum. This museum is at the site of a Viking burial mound found to contain a 20-metre-long Viking warship in which a Viking chieftain was buried along with his most precious belongings.
After breakfast, the day is at your disposal to drive back to Copenhagen. The car hire is included for the full day. Consider visiting the beautifully situated Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, which is a side trip and not quite Viking related, but a must for art lovers, as you return to Copenhagen.
