Nordic Farm Holidays

Farm Stays in the Nordic Region

Our Nordic Farm Holidays program extends across the Nordic region; including Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland. We have teamed up with Scandinavian countryside working farms offering accommodation on site. Our Farm Holidays are perfect for families with young children, or others interested in getting an insight into Nordic farm life. Most farms will have animals, and some give you an opportunity to partake in farm activities.

We have spent time selecting farms situated in key locations allowing you the opportunity to explore attractions and scenic highlights in the regions on day tours. Then come back to the farm in the afternoon enjoying a good traditional home cooked meal.

Our Nordic Farm Holidays are designed as short self-drive itineraries in each of the countries Norway, Finland, Denmark, Sweden & Iceland and can be combined to create a longer more in-depth itinerary if you wish.

During your stay you will (besides enjoying yourself) be able to take a peek into the world of farming in our region. Our farm stays are located on real working farms - however, note in Scandinavia & Iceland, some of these farms produce grass and hay.

Your hosts will be english speaking and offer you advice about authentic local experiences.

Comfort and variation during your farm holiday:

If a luxurious stay is what you are after, these holidays aren't for you. What you will get is a comfortable stay with hosts who are passionate about giving you a wonderful experience.

We recognise that most people will not necessarily want to spend each and every night at a farm B&B. Therefore, on longer itineraries, we will mix your accommodation up offering you a combination of a farm stay, country lodges, boutique hotels and kros/inns. Each of the properties we offer is unique, and lodging can range from a working farm to a comfortable country lodge/hotel.

You can leave the choice of accommodation to us giving you a great mixture, or you can be specific about your preferred accommodation when you book.

Our accommodation categories are:

  • Manor House/Historic Hotel/Castle - historic countryside manors, hotels and castles turned into stately accommodation (Norway, Sweden, Denmark & Finland)
  • Country Lodge/Hotel - lodge found in national parks, countryside and mountains (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland & Iceland)
  • Kro/Inn - countryside B&B/restaurant (mainly Sweden & Denmark)
  • Farm/Gård - working farms, some with farm animals (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland & Iceland)
  • Lighthouse - traditional lighthouses on the coast converted to accommodation (Norway, Sweden & Finland)
  • Cabin/Hytte/Rorbu (fisherman's cottage) - self catering option with kitchen/kitchenette (Norway)

Some of our tours lend themselves to more coastal village stays as they skirt the sea such as the Bergen to Trondheim tour whilst others head inland and offer more farm stay opportunities such as an Iceland self-drive or the Oslo to Bergen tour.

What we will never do is put you in a chain hotel in a town or city. You will always stay somewhere unique, somewhere with charm.

Local Activities on offer:

Beyond the farm activities and the tranquillity & harmony of a countryside stay, our farms offer exceptional local activities. Here is an example of what is on offer for our Norwegian self drive farm stays.

Oslo to Bergen self drive:

This tour weaves along the fjord roads of Western Norway - following rivers and mountain ranges. Examples of activities on offer are river rafting, flying fishing, hiking and fjord excursions.

On day two of this itinerary, you enter the Sjoa valley which is a hot bed for adventure in Norway. You can spend a day or an afternoon rafting on the Heidal river or the family friendly Otta River. Spend the day walking through the mountains watching Musk Oxen roam freely in the Dovre National Park or head underground for some incredible caving.

Bergen to Trondheim self drive:

If you love driving, then this tour could be the perfect one for you. Driving the Trollstigen Road and the Atlantic Road are included in the route. The Atlantic Road zigzags across low bridges that jut out over the sea. The Hustadvika section is an infamous stretch of ocean and when in storm it is truly dramatic. In calmer weather you might spot whales and seals.

This region offers many fishing experiences from deep sea fishing trips to just throwing in your line on the many local piers.  Most nights during this trip will be an opportunity to fish - either fly fishing at Gloppen Hotel and  at holiday cabins on the shores of Lake Jølstravatnet or deep sea fishing at Håholmen Sea Cottages.

Educational Experiences for children:

Our Nordic Farm Holidays offer an unforgettable countryside adventure – and fun for the whole family. Not only will you enjoy rich green pastures and valleys, country cottages, mountain farms and fjords, but a farm stay also provides an ‘educational’ experience for city kids to join in and learn where eggs come from, how to milk a cow, feed baby animals, ride a horse and perhaps pick the vegetables for dinner.

A country holiday provides the opportunity to spend time with family and friends, you can join your hosts in daily farm activities or relax in the tranquillity of the countryside. Wherever you go you’ll find friendly people and warm country hospitality. The hearty home style country cooking is particularly enjoyable after a busy day on the farm!

However, these holidays are not just designed for those who want to get down and dirty on the farm - if you want to see the best of the Nordic Region, away from the crowds, enjoy organic farm meals, stay in historic homesteads, we have plenty of options available.
