Turku
Finland's oldest town
Turku, located on Finland’s southwest coast, is the country’s oldest city and one of its most historic cultural centres. Built around the banks of the Aura River, the city combines medieval heritage with a lively modern atmosphere.
The skyline is dominated by the impressive Turku Cathedral, one of Finland’s most important historic landmarks. Nearby stands Turku Castle, a medieval fortress that now houses a museum telling the story of Finland’s early history.
Turku has long been an important cultural and academic centre. Museums such as the Turku Art Museum, Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of Art and the Sibelius Museum showcase the country’s artistic heritage. The Aboa Vetus museum, built over an archaeological site from the 14th century, provides a fascinating look at the city’s medieval past.
Every summer, Turku hosts a variety of festivals and cultural events, including the popular Medieval Market, which recreates the atmosphere of the city’s historic trading era.
Turku is also known as Finland’s official “Christmas City.” Each Christmas Eve, the centuries-old Declaration of Christmas Peace is read in the Old Great Square, continuing a tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages.
Turku Airport (TKU) provides connections to Helsinki and several European cities, while regular trains link the city with the Finnish capital in about two hours.
