Here is  a short guide to these new Iceland self drives.

TOUR OPTION 1: 11 days self drive in the Westfjord

Take a journey northwest and into the Icelandic countryside, self-driving the sparsely populated Westfjords region. Isolated, rugged and wind-shorn: these are qualities that easily define the Westfjords in Iceland.

Trek around the Snæfellsjökull area on an optional horse trek, the beauty of the rugged landscape will never cease to amaze you.

Westfjords lonely peninsula also harbours the unspoilt beauty of Iceland's more secluded landmarks. Dynjandi waterfall - one of Iceland’s most impressive & majestic waterfalls, are often considered the icon of The Westfjords. There are seven levels to explore.

Keen birders can head out at dusk to the Látrabjarg cliffs. Did you know that Atlantic puffins spend most of their lives at sea, but return to land to form breeding colonies during spring and summer? Puffins can be seen in Iceland from early April until September each year. Photo: Brenda, Flickr

TOUR OPTION 2: South Iceland & Vestmannaeyjar - Explore glaciers, volcanoes and the Vestmannaeyjar Archipelago

Head away from the crowds with a visit to the remote Vestmannaeyjar, also known as the Westmann Islands. This small island contains magical scenery and birdlife to delight you for days. Popular attractions include Iceland´s best 18 hole golf course, deep sea fishing, bird- and whale-watching and hiking: up volcanoes, over lava fields or along the shore.

Southern archipelago is also well known for it's volcanic activity. Photo: Iceland.is

On your road trip, drive to the Skaftafell National Park headquarters for a glacier hike on crampons on Svínafellsjökull, part of the great Vatnajökull Glacier in Skaftafell National Park. On this tour you will traverse zones of different glacial formations where huge water cauldrons, deep crevasses and strangely shaped ridges and other ice formations await your discovery.

TOUR OPTION3: Snæfellsnes & North Iceland - Whale Watching and historical sites

North Iceland is well know for a number of historic coastal towns, each with its own character that builds on the history and culture of the locals. Stay in some of these coastal towns as you explore this unique region.

Your drive brings you to numerous historical sites, secret hot springs and natural attractions, including the magical Snæfellsjökull glacier, Kirkjufell Mountain, Hvitserkur stack and Kolugljúfur canyon.

Whale watching is the final highlight of the week where you will be surrounded by birds and beautiful scenery, while observing dolphins and minkes, humpbacks or even blue whales.
