Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive and drive to Sørvágur and surrounding area.

Arrive at Vágar Airport and pick-up your rental car from the airport.

First stop is only some 200 metres down the road, a local hotel. After check in, take a drive to the small and picturesque villages Bøur and Gásadalur. The tour offers an unparalleled view of the fjord, the islet Tindhólmur and Mykines. Until recently the only way to get to charming Gásadalur was on foot from Bøur and over the mountain. Although there now is a tunnel to Gásadalur, the village is still unspoiled and has preserved its charm and authenticity.

Day 2 - Island of Mykines and the village of Gjógv

Meet your guide in Sørvágur, just 5-minutes away from your hotel, ready to take the ferry to the Mykines island at 10:20. After ca. 45min ferry journey and on arrival at Mykines, you will go on a guided tour of the village with some refreshments. After that continue on a guided walk to Mykineshólmur, which is connected to the main island by a wooden footbridge over a 35 meter deep gorge and ends with spectacular views from the lighthouse. You will be walking directly through the Puffin colony, so expect "close encounters of the bird kind" and many photo opportunities. Return ferry to Sørvágur at 17:05.

Please note: this tour is only available until end of August. Due to landslide in 2022, it may be impossible to walk all the way to Mykineshólmur.

From Sørvágur, continue to the picturesque village of Gjógv. On the way there you will pass the first subsea tunnel, which on the deepest spot is more than 105 meters under sea level. The drive is ca. 75km and takes little over an hour.

Enjoy the next two nights at the unique Hotel Gjáargarður in Gjógv. There is a small restaurant within this quaint hotel.

Day 3 - Saksun, Dúvugarðar - a beach walk, museums and viking settlements.

We suggest a trip to Tjørnavík - a walk along the beach where you might find remainings from the vikings, as this is the place where the viking settled first in the Faroe Islands.

A stop in Saksun is at must. The village is surrounded by steep mountains and a lagoon-like lake with a sandy beach leading the way out to the Atlantic Ocean. If the tide is going out to can walk all the way out to the sea. Back in the village you can take the opportunity to visit the church and the old farmhouse Dúvugarðar.

From Oyndafjørður to the island Borðoy through the second subsea tunnel - where you in the bottom will see the fantastic glass paintings of Tronður Patursson.

From Viðareiði to Kunoy where you can enjoy a walk in the very nice plantation. Then to Klaksvík again where you can visit Christians church, the church in Klaksvík which is told to be the most beautiful church on the Faroe islands.

Take the opportunity to visit Kalsoy which is known for its many legends. The best known of them is the legend about the seal woman who was captured and forced to marry a farmer´s son from Mikladalur and had children with him. But she longed to go back to the sea and one day when her husband had gone fishing, she found the key to the chest where her seal skin was hidden, put it on and returned to her natural element. See the beautiful statue of the seal woman in the village Mikladalur.

On the way to Tórshavn we suggest a stop in Leirvík to see the viking settlements there.

In Tórshavn - Take the opportunity to visit the faroese handy work and design shops, the cozy cafes near the harbor Vágsbotn, and maybe even a visit to the National museum, the Art museum and the Nordic house.

Head down to Barbara Fish House - their fish soup is fantastic, located in a very cozy and picturesque location in the old part of the town. Or chasing Michelen star ratings, perhaps taxi out to KOKS.

On arrival in the port of Tvøroyri, you will drive from the ferry port south to the most southerly point of the Faroe Islands, Akraberg. From there make you way northwards, taking in many stunning and spectacular cliff top vistas and charming historic villages with ancient Viking secrets.

Explore Tórshavn; a walk through the old part of Tórshavn "á Reyni", Tinganes and the old fort Skansin - the tour can also be done with a local guide.

In the afternoon we suggest a tour to Kirkjubøur (20 min. drive) - the old cultural centre of the Faroes. Visit the roughly 900-year-old Roykstovan, where the King's yeoman still lives after 17 generations; Ólav's church from AD 1111, named aftger King Olav the Holy. This church is the oldest church in the Faroes, and is still in use. See the ruins of St. Magnus Cathedral, which is regarded as one of the largest cultural attractions in the Faroes.

You might also be interested in an excursion to the island of Nólsoy - just 20 minutes away from Tórshavn. The light house there has one of the largest lens which is more that 3 metre in diameter and the weight is over 4 tonnes. A hike out to Borðan where you find the lighthouse can be recommend.
