4 day - Short stay in Tallinn to combine with Finland holidays.

Combine this short Tallinn city break with any of our Finnish packages throughout the year. Tallinn is a short 2-hour trip from Helsinki by express boat across the Baltic Sea. We can organise the express boat from Helsinki, the train from St.Petersburg or the overnight boat from Stockholm.

Tallinn is wonderful any time of year but certainly comes to life during the Christmas and festive season. Christmas in Tallinn has a special magic - decorations, traditional craft and specialist markets, and the festivities and sights of the historic Old Town. Plenty of cosy cafes and cheery pubs fill the town with a great spirit. This tour can also be run during New Years where you can pop the champagne, celebrate at gala dinners and enjoy fireworks over Tallinn.

Day 2 - Tallinn - a charming old medieval city

Tallinn is a charming blend of medieval tranquillity and modern urban life. The Old Town is wonderful all the year, but at it's best in the run-up to Christmas when the magic is felt at every corner.

After breakfast, you will be meet by a guide for your 3 hour tour of Tallinn. You will have a short bus trip and then a walking tour. There is plenty to discover in this UNESCO Heritage Old Town: the Lower Town, once a free trading town and member of the Hanseatic League, with its guild houses, warehouses, a unique Gothic Town Hall, dwellings of prosperous merchants, and churches with charming slender towers; and Toompea or the Upper Town, the seat of German landlords and their houses from the 18th-19th centuries. These two sections of town didn't get on in the past - there was a big door which was locked each evening to divide the two and keep the peace.

After your morning city tour, if you have decided to visit the Kadriorg park, travel by car/minibus to the Kadriorg park area. St. Nicholas' church, now a museum and concert hall, has three of the four most important medieval works of art in Estonia on display.

German merchants from the island of Gotland had this church built to St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. The church was originally built in the early 13th century, and was like a fortress, but over the centuries, the building was improved with various additions and renovations. The Foreign Art Museum houses a valuable collection of European art.

It's situated not far from the city centre and was once called the Versailles of Tallinn due to its marvellous baroque style, with geometrically planted and cut trees and flower beds. The Russian Tsar Peter I built the complete baroque palace and park in the early 18th century as a present for his wife Catherine I. The palace was restored a few years ago and now houses the Art Museum.

If you have decided to visit the Kumu, you will be seeing the Art Museum of Estonia's main branch and one of the largest art museums in northern Europe. In contrast to the palace's historical architecture, Kumu is a sleek, modern building, which opened in 2006 and was awarded the European Museum of the Year in 2008. Go inside with your guide to see its vast collection, which includes Estonian art dating back to the 18th century.

Today is free to wander the design shops, art galleries and fashion boutiques in the Old Town, with the main focus on local Estonian brands and artists. Enjoy an optional ballet or opera performance at the Estonian Theatre before the day ends. If you wish, there is a food tour that you can join as well.

In the late afternoon to early evening, be sure to head to the Patkuli viewing platform on the north side of Toompea hill. On the right you'll see the Town Wall with its defensive towers. On the left lies Kalamaja and Pelgulinn areas with Railway Station as landmark. This platform allows you to have the complete view of the Old Town spread out below like a toy fort.

    Important Information

There are many optional activities that you can add to this short tour - cooking classes, additional walking tours or adventures. Please ask us for details.

You have the choice of either joining a guided tour of the KUMU Art Gallery or the Kadrioga Park. Please note that both of these attractions are not open on a Monday. They are also closed on Tuesdays between October - March.

Tallinn has many narrow walkways and so can be crowded when cruise ships arrive. We try to plan your holiday during the days when there are fewer ships arriving.
