Day 1 - Train from Stockholm Central to mid-Sweden and transfer to your island
Your train will depart from central Stockholm or the airport. Sit back and enjoy the comfortable journey to the small mid-Swedish town of Ockelbo. This lake-studded farming region is best known as the Finnish Forest, a wild place settled in the 17th Century by Finns. You will be picked up at the train station and transferred to boat to take you to the island at 13.30. Don't be late, this is the only transfer for the day! Lunch box included on your arrival.
Motoring over mirrored waters, you will pass deserted island upon island, each ringed by emerald reeds and grey boulders. Docking at an island no bigger than a football pitch, you will find a red-and-white cabin: your home for the next two nights.
There is no electricity on Stilleben’s private island, but the cabin comes with a gas-powered fridge, stove and indoor loo.
You will receive a cool box of ingredients for you to make meals with on the island, plus homemade jams, bread and knackebrot (traditional crisp bread). There are staple dry goods, including pasta, in the cupboard.
A little red cabin in the forest, on a private island somewhere in middle Sweden - it doesn't get more typically Swedish than this! Let the pace of life slow to a leisurely stroll, a gentle paddle in the canoe or a refreshing swim in the lake. Simply relax, enjoy the view and listen to the sound of nature.
Th Cabin has space for a maximum of 2 people (a double bed and if you want to bring older children as they can fit into the extra single beds) and is only accessible by boat. There is a shower, but if you prefer Swedish, try a dip in the lake!
Your meals are based on permaculture design principles with a heavy emphasis on locally produced and organic food. Your stay at the cabin is about reducing our impact on the environment and being at one with nature. The organic ingredients for your meal will be provided along with a mouth-watering recipe – cook at your leisure!
AccommodationPrivate island retreat
Day 2 - A day at peace
Scramble around the island’s fringes, explore on foot and in an orange “Ockelbo” canoe (a design classic manufactured here in the Sixties, along with the iconic Ockelbo skidoos). Skinny-dip in rib-crushingly cold waters, lie directly on the sun-heated deck to warm up. Winter brings it's own charms with a cozy fireplace and ice play. Bring our your card games and watch for the Northern Lights if you are there in the right season!
Days 3 - 4 - Explore your local region - wildlife safaris, lakeside sauna and tiny Swedish towns
At a organised time on day 3, you will be picked up on your island and return to home base.
Stilleben is a place for quiet reflection. You won't find TVs here but you will find endless nature trails and plenty of local wildlife. Besides moose, reindeer, deer and a variety of birds, which you can spot without too much effort, this region, Gästrikland is also home to predators such as the bear, wolf, lynx and wolverine.
Explore our surrounding forests on animal trails, past feeding marks, footprints and resting places to capture the perfect picture. Winter brings with it alpine skiing, dogsledding, snowshoeing, icefishing and horse sledding. Summer activities include bear safari (Tuesday and Friday only), marsh walking, mountain biking, hiking and much more. We can pre-order a safari for this afternoon or tomorrow morning.
This cosy hotel was once the village school in the typical Swedish village of Åmot. It is surrounded by hills and forests. The old school has just 6 bedrooms all with ensuite bathrooms so you can be sure of a small and personal experience. Don't forget your swimming costume as your stay at Stilleben includes 2 hrs in the hottub and sauna, located by the lake.
Dinner is included for your stay - expect home style, elegant meals using local produce. Dinner is served at 6pm.
You can order a picnic basket for your day's activities. Local, though, is the theme of the kitchen: most produce comes from nearby farmers or Jeroen’s permaculture kitchen garden, which stretches down to the lake where the b&b’s new sauna juts elegantly over the water.
Supplement this with wild berry picking at your leisure.
Day 5 - Transfer to the train station and travel back to Stockholm
This morning you will return to the train station, very reluctantly.

Stilleben does not have an alcohol licence and there is no possibility to purchase wine / beer locally. You are welcome to bring your own - it is very common in Scandinavia to stock up and BYO. If you stay in Stockholm prior to arrival we recommend you make your purchases at the state run off-licence Systembolaget (not open Sundays).
Pack bug-spray (in early summer), warm jumpers for lakeside evenings and water shoes to navigate rocky shorelines.
Lakeside waters generally drop away gradually but small non-swimmers should be monitored. Life jackets are supplied.
Night safaris with infrared goggles, guided lake fishing trips and horse riding can be arranged.
