7 days - Become a Polar Pioneer on this voyage to Svalbard and the North Cape.

If you are thinking of a traditional summer holiday with packed beaches, this is not the voyage for you! An expedition to Svalbard takes you to extreme latitudes, where summer can feel almost like winter. But there will be sun, in fact 24 hours of it, and you can enjoy the Midnight Sun in a wintry landscape. This is a memorable experience that is completely out of the ordinary.

  • Explore Tromsø, North Cape, Bjørnøya and Svalbard
  • Take part in Expedition days in Svalbard
  • Enjoy 24 hours of daylight with the Midnight Sun

In 1896, Hurtigruten's founder and tourism entrepreneur Captain Richard With, opened a hotel on Svalbard. Because he wanted to make the hotel available for pioneer tourists and trappers, he also started the Sportsman's route the same year. DS Lofoten sailed this stretch between Hammerfest and Svalbard. The captain on these sailings was Otto Sverdrup, who had been on several polar expeditions with explorer Fridtjof Nansen and later did expeditions on the original explorer vessel Fram. This Sportsman's route was basically the start of our Explorer-expeditions.

This short Arctic expedition is full of excitement! Stand on the northernmost point of Europe, step ashore on wild Bjørnøya and spend two and a half days exploring the beautifully rugged coastline and narrow fjords in the west of Spitsbergen. Excursion opportunities include hiking, kayaking and visiting a science station, and don´t forget there will be chances to spot the mighty polar bear.

In 2019, Hurtigruten will add a brand new ship to its fleet: the MS Roald Amundsen. The state of the art vessel features new and environmentally sustainable hybrid technology that will reduce fuel consumption and show the world that hybrid propulsion on large ships is possible.

MS Roald Amundsen is the first of two hybrid ships Hurtigruten will add to its fleet over the next few years, cutting emissions by sailing with electrical propulsion. Hybrid technology, combined with the advanced construction of the hull and effective use of electricity on board will reduce fuel consumption and CO2-emissions on the ships by 20 percent. The build of these two ships represents the largest single investment in the history of Hurtigruten.

The future of shipping will be silent and emission free. MS Roald Amundsen will lead the way towards an even more sustainable way of traveling. Sailing on electrical power is not only a great benefit for the environment, but it will also enhance the impact of experiencing nature for the guests. The ship will be specially constructed for voyages in polar waters and serve as a comfortable basecamp at sea – bringing adventurers from all over the world to the most spectacular destinations in the most sustainable way.

Ship facilities:

One of the most eye-catching exterior design features of the ships will be the two-level indoor/outdoor Observation Deck wrapped around the top of the ships’ raked bow. In a vast area behind it, you’ll find the core of the onboard experience: Amundsen Science Center.

Packed with state of the art technology and high tech gadgets such as touch screens and science equipment, the immersive edutainment area will be the place guests and staff/crew meet, mingle and create a deeper understanding for the areas they explore. The flexible venue will feature lecture spaces, a small library, and speciality areas for workshops in photography, biology, and more. The area, featuring large windows, will also be the onboard HQ for Hurtigruten’s hand picked Expedition Team.

The stunning scenery will be reflected in a rich and comfortable interior design. Scandinavian materials from nature, such as granite, oak, birch and wool will be used to create relaxed and stylish cabins and public areas. All cabins are outside, 50 % will have private balconies, aft suites will feature private outdoor Jacuzzis with spectacular views.

Day 1 - Arrive Tromsø

Our voyage begins, as so many great explorations have, in Tromsø. It’s a city with many great attractions but it is also easy to escape from the metropolis if you seek wilderness. In a traditional wharf house from the 1830s, you’ll find the Polar Museum where you can learn more about Tromsø’s polar history. The experience centre Polaria lies five minutes from the heart of the city. Here you’ll find an Arctic aquarium, interesting knowledge-based exhibits, a panoramic cinema and a gift and souvenir shop. The city’s most recognisable landmark is the Arctic Cathedral, built in 1965, featuring a huge original stained-glass mosaic.

Take the Fjellheisen Cable Car to the top of the Fløyfjellet Mountain (420 m) and enjoy breathtaking views of the city, mountains and fjords.

Day 2 - At 71° N - North Cape

A few hours before we arrive at Skarsvåg we will sail past the spectacular North Cape cliff, offering you a stunning view of this famous landmark. Skarsvåg is a small village that lies along the northern coast of the island of Magerøya, and it claims the distinction of being the world's northernmost fishing village.

Join the optional excursion to the North Cape and get a feeling what it’s like to stand at the end of the Earth. There is a combined museum and restaurant at the plateau, where you can learn more about early expeditions and watch a panoramic film that takes you through the four seasons in this landscape full of contrasts, light and breathtaking scenery.

Day 3 - Exploring the Icy Arctic Ocean, Bjørnøya

Bjørnøya, with a population of just nine persons, is the southernmost island of the Svalbard Archipelago. It is an isolated spot in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, known for hosting perhaps the largest concentration of sea birds in the Northern Hemisphere. This is where the cold waters from the Arctic Ocean meet warm Gulf Stream currents. When these water masses collide, nutrient-rich water is pushed up to the surface, making it an "all-you-can-eat" buffet for 126 different bird species. If conditions allow, we will land here.

Days 4 - 5 - Amazing Fjords with Fascinating History

Cruising northbound from Bjørnøya, the Captain and Expedition leader will make the best use of the conditions at hand. We may cruise into Hornsund and explore the ice-filled fjord by small boats, or land to hike to a viewpoint overlooking the glacier. The Expedition team will tell stories of the history of the area, including that of Wanny Woldstad, the first female trapper-hunter who lived here in the 1930s.

We often observe polar bears, although not every day and seldom at very close range. Like most things in a true wilderness, there are no absolute guarantees. But the more eyes scouting through binoculars, the better our chances of observing the King of the Arctic.

We might visit Kongsfjord, considered one of the most beautiful fjord areas in Spitsbergen, with mighty glaciers calving icebergs into the sea, framed by stunning mountain formations. On the shore of Kongfjord is the former mining settlement of Ny-Ålesund, now an international centre for research, with a picturesque mix of old and new buildings.

Days 6 - 7 - Disembark Longyearbyen and fly to Oslo

Every great explorer's voyage comes to an end. Many guests report a subtle exhilaration in the afterglow of this journey, partly from the thrill of coming just a few hundred miles from the North Pole.

The final day, we will have a morning landing and sail into Isfjord, the most extensive fjord system on Svalbard, on our way to Longyearbyen. We arrive in Longyearbyen late in the evening and transport you to the airport for your night flight to Oslo.

We arrive in Oslo early in the morning Day 7. You can either fly back home, or spend some time to explore the Norwegian capital before returning home
