  • Private 50DN Minibus

11 days - Independent tour, staying at ICEHOTEL, Tromsø, Swedish and Finnish Lapland.

"It's the best of both worlds. It's touring without really being on a tour, so all the minor details are taken care of, allowing you the freedom to get on and enjoy the holiday." Join our private 50 Degrees North mini-van for sections of this tour

Scandinavian Lapland offers a great range of comfortable Nordic style accommodations and activities with an added bonus of the mesmerising Northern Lights. During the day, you get to know huskies and reindeers, and at night, our guides will take you out on snowshoes and snowmobiles to ‘hunt’ for the Aurora Borealis. Travelling on a private 50 Degrees North minibus between remote Northern locations, you can just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Experience the vastness of Finnish Lapland, the incredible wild scenery of coastal Norway and the original ICEHOTEL located in the little village of Jukkasjärvi.

The trip runs weekly from January 2020 to March 2020 with fixed departures from Kittilä every Saturday.
This isn't a group tour as such, but for a few days during this itinerary, everyone shares the same minibus and can make friends and enjoy the company of our local bus driver!

Itinerary

Day 1 - Welcome to Lapland

Arrival to Kittilä airport and transfer to Harriniva Hotel. Harriniva Hotel is located 230kms north of the Arctic Circle in the Finnish part of Lapland and offers a great range of winter activities. A comfortable Scandinavian style accommodation is combined with a wellness centre with a wide range of therapies and treatments.

In the afternoon (at 4pm), join us in our traditional kota to cook pancakes over the open fire and for an informative workshop covering the fascinating phenomenon of the northern lights, and the science behind it.

Accommodation in cosy double rooms. Dinner in the restaurant.

Day 2 - Meet your dogsledding team of eager huskies and head into the snowy wilderness

Today it is time to meet your dogsledding team of eager huskies and head into the snowy wilderness. You will visit the Harriniva Arctic Sleddog Centre with nearly 400 huskies and hear of the life of these arctic dogs. The husky guide will teach you how to handle the sled and you will meet your team of 4-5 dogs that accompany you for your safari. Two people share a sled and there will be an opportunity to change drivers during the safari.

Dinner at the hotel's restaurant, and afterwards - if the skies are clear - head out and look for those Northern Lights!

Day 3 - Reindeers & Sami Culture

Breakfast and transfer to reindeer farm (20 minutes). Today you will visit a 100 years old, traditional reindeer farm at Torassieppi. You will get information about reindeer and reindeer husbandry, as well as the old way of living in Lapland in a museum and old Lappish farm house. You learn how to throw the Lappish lasso, and finally test your reindeer driving skills on a reindeer safari through the forest (1-2 persons per sled). Lunch will be served around an open fire during the safari.

Return to Harriniva in the afternoon, where a warm sauna is waiting.

Day 4 - Private 50 Degrees North minibus to Tromsø - the middle of the Aurora Borealis zone

After breakfast, board your mini bus to travel to Tromsø, 6-hours north across the Norwegian border. Tromsø is the gateway to the Arctic and one of the best and most cosmopolitan places to observe the spectacle that is called the Northern Lights. Tromsø is located in the middle of the Aurora Borealis zone, and following the planet’s rotation, Tromsø moves into the aurora zone from 6pm to midnight.

This museum contains the history of the Arctic explorers Amundsen, Nansen and Scott. The walk ends at the Polaria aquarium and environmental centre.

The rest of the day is free to wander around in this Arctic capital  - if it is a bit fresh outside, explore the lovely cafes & galleries.

Day 8 - Abisko Sky Station Evening visit

In the morning, join an exciting daytime Snowmobile Safari through the frozen wilderness and admire the snowy mountains.

After dinner, visit the Abisko Aurora Sky Station. Abisko, in the middle of the Aurora zone, is considered to be the best place on earth to see the Aurora Borealis. With its fresh, clean air and its practically permanent cloud-free sky, the prerequisites in Abisko are optimal. More or less active Northern Lights can be seen almost every night over the winter months, however they can never be 100% guaranteed.

If you wish to enjoy dinner at the sky station (not included in tour), we would recommend booking beforehand. We can do this for you if you would like.

Day 9 - Travel to ICEHOTEL & stay in an Ice room

Take the local train to Kiruna and transfer to the ICEHOTEL. Wander around the ICEHOTEL and check out all the different art suites.

Enjoy a drink in the uber-cool icebar before settling into your snow room at the ICEHOTEL. Choose between two restaurants: The ICE Restaurant with an "Ice Menu" or the Old Homestead with a more traditional feel.

This evening, you will settle into your ice room for the night. Sleep in thermal sleeping bags laid out on reindeer skins on a special bed made of snow and ice.

Inside ICEHOTEL, the temperature is never colder than -5 °C to -8 °C, regardless of how cold it may be outside. Dress in warm thermal underwear, put on a hat and slip into the cozy sleeping bag. You are awakened in the morning with a cup of hot lingonberry juice at your bedside. Breakfast buffet, morning sauna and towels are included in your stay.

Note: The ICEHOTEL loans you snow boots and for those who feel cold, onesie snow suits - both free of charge.

Important Information

Please note that the itinerary and price is subject to availability. We do our utmost to create an itinerary as close to this published tour as possible.

The private 50 Degrees North minibus or similar has space for 10-12 people, but will operate even with only 1-2 travellers on board (this may convert to a taxi). The bus driver/transfer driver will stop along the way for breaks but not for additional sightseeing.

Read about staying overnight at the ICEHOTEL here.

If you would like to stay in a Glass igloo during your trip, consider one of the amazing Aurora Domes during your first few days. These domes are a round igloo-shaped tent with Lappish themed decoration and one transparent wall. The Domes are completely insulated and a fireplace with an open fire gives out both warmth and comforting ambiance.

The Domes are situated close to Harriniva on the bank of lake Torassieppi. The transparent walls of the Dome are facing north to insure the best possible view of the starlit sky and the ever elusive northern lights over the frozen lake. Mod cons e.g. toilet, shower and sauna are within easy walking distance. The Domes have beds for two but can also accommodate two extra beds.
