7 days - Finland Winter tour to see the Aurora Borealis.

Start in Kemi, a port town on the northern Gulf of Bothnia, in Finland. Ride snowmobiles along the frozen sea to Icebreaker Sampo, which after thirty years of duty keeping the sea-lanes open for commercial vessels, has retired to the life of a cruise ship for ice adventurers. On board learn about icebreakers and try swimming in a waterproof thermal suit among the broken ice blocks.

Then travel further to Rovaniemi, the official home of Santa Claus on the Arctic Circle. Visit Santa's home and take part in a special ceremony for crossing the Arctic Circle.

Finish the trip in style with an overnight stay in a Glass Igloo. Spend the night admiring the starry sky and hopefully - the dance of the Northern Lights above your bed. Read here about what it is like to sleep in a glass igloo.

    Itinerary

Day 1 - Kemi, home to the Sampo Icebreaker

Upon arrival in Kemi, transfer to your hotel. Kemi is a northern port town lying at the gateway of Finnish Lapland on the shores of the Arctic Gulf of Bothnia. Its population is around 27,000 people mostly working in the pulp mills and the only chromium mine in Europe. It is also home to two tourist attractions - the world's largest snow castle (reconstructed every year with a different architecture).

If the Snow castle complex is open, don your hats and gloves and go for an adventure. A small town, Kemi is easy to navigate and explore.

    Accommodation
    Cumulus Hotel, Kemi or similar.

Day 2 - Snowmobile ride along the frozen sea to the Icebreaker Sampo.

Spend the day exploring the Arctic - snowmobiling, swimming in the ocean and visiting a small reindeer camp. Leaving the hotel after breakfast, snowmobile to a Reindeer camp where you will hear about the Lappish reindeer herding and the life of the reindeer. You can also try driving a reindeer-pulled sleigh. Delicious sandwiches and coffee are served in a traditional lappish teepee called kota.

After the stop the snowmobile safari continues towards the Icebreaker Sampo that is anchored in the middle of the frozen sea. We will get onboard and the crew will tell us about how the ship functions from the captain's conning to the engine room. We'll witness how the ice that can be up to one metre thick, breaks on the sides of the ship. We will also try winter swimming safely wearing special warm dry suites, and have a meal in the cosy restaurant of Sampo.

After the cruise we will continue the snowmobile safari back to Kemi.

During the day you get to meet Santa Claus himself and enjoy a delicious lunch in a cosy restaurant. And you will get a Diploma for crossing the Arctic Circle!

** Yes, there are two different Reindeer farm visits included in the trip - but both offer unique local experiences with Lappish locals. Snowmobiling is used as a form of practical transport in this region and wouldn't you rather be on a snowmobile than a mini bus!
