5 days - Norway's most popular bike route, independent departures. Family friendly.

Rallarvegen is the most popular cycling route in Norway, and follows the hand-made service road used during the building of the Bergenbanen railway from 1895-1902. Rallarvegen follows the outskirts of the Hardangervidda Plateau, leads you along the Bergen Railway Line from Haugastøl via Finse, Hallingskeid, Myrdal and down to Flåm. The road by itself is an attraction, but it also brings you through a fantastic highland area starting at 1000 meters above sea level, peaking at 1222 meters for then to lead you back down to the fjords at sea level.

The road is 82 km long and the scenery varies immensely, from Arctic high mountain nature across Hardangervidda to the opulent green Flåmsdalen valley. Although the road standard is rather rough along the route, there is little or no tourist traffic, and there are some asphalted stretches here and there.

This trips is great for families and finishing in Bergen allows you to travel on to other regions of Norway with ease.

Besides enjoying these spaces, it is recommended to take the ferry down to the island Bygdøy to see the many museums there and stroll through Vigelandsparken, the largest single artist sculpture garden in the world.

Discover the new area of Bjorvika with the new Opera House and Munch Museum and then explore the charming shopping streets, cosy cafés and exciting eateries of Grünerløkka. After going shopping at numerous design boutiques, vintage shops and flea markets, head to the Mathallen food hall for local specialties. Lastly, visit the new National Museum of Norway down by the harbour before finding a spot in one of the local fish restaurants for dinner.

After breakfast, continue the cycling trip along the railway construction road (Rallarvegen) to Myrdal and on to Flåm. The trip follows a well maintained gravel road through the Hardangervidda. Take your time to enjoy the fabulous scenery, and if you are lucky you might even spot wild reindeer in the area. You will pass by the Fagervatn Lake, which is the highest point of Rallarvegen at 1310m. In the summertime, a café is run in the Fagernut Dwelling, where you can buy freshly made waffles and coffee.

The terrain is reasonably flat with some up and down between Finse and Myrdal (38km). Then at Myrdal you will take off towards Flåm and follow the very steep downhill switchback path to the bottom of the Flåm Valley. These last 20km from Myrdal to Flåm offer stunning views down the valley following the Flåm Railway. Doing the trip by bike allows you to plan a leisurely trip with lots of photo opportunities that those travelling by train will miss.

The trip from Finse to Flåm is an good day-trip following the foot and bicycle path along the railway to Myrdal and down to Flåm valley. Distance: 55km. Drop off bike at the bike depot in Flåm, get your overnight luggage from the train station and check into your hotel.

Note for families:

Rallarvegen is at times very steep, and the road is largely unsecured and demanding for children. If you want to ride all the way, we recommend that the children are 12 years old. That being said we have 7 year olds who are fine, and 16 year olds who don't stand stand a chance. Luggage and kid bike trolleys are not recommended between Finse and Flåm. The ride between Haugastøl and Finse is suitable for younger children. The road is in relatively good shape, and not as steep as the Finse-Flåm route.
