Hurtigruten News 2016
There is a lot happening with Hurtigruten this year and we will do our utmost to keep you up to date.
2016 is a year of big changes to the Hurtigruten fleet and we look forward to sharing the experience with you. MS Polarlys is currently being remodelled in Sweden and MS Midnatsol has just been in a German dry dock getting ready for her Arctic & Antarctic sailings.
Four Hurtigruten ships - MS Polarlys, MS Kong Harald, MS Nordkapp, and MS Nordnorge will have the new Arctic Interior and all common areas will be upgraded throughout the year. Restaurants and menu items are also going to be transformed. Outside BBQ areas and contemporary coffee bars will pop up in the panoramic lounges.
Breakfasts & Lunch buffets on board the Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Voyages are going premium with a modern cafe design. The Coastal kitchen concept will be delivered with plenty of the local gourmet foods such as yoghurt, berries & cheeses. Coffee thermos and cups on each table will make getting that morning coffee rush much easier.
Guest lecturer on board - MS Midnatsol is heading down south for the first time this year and joining her will be a guest lecturer, German explorer Arved Fuchs. He will travel in Antarctica on the MS Midnatsol from the 24 November to 7 December 2016.
In 30 December 1989, he and Reinhold Messner were the first to reach the South Pole with neither animal nor motorised help, on skis, and with wind-assistance (parasail). They did the journey of Shackleton from Elephant Island to South Georgia in a replica of the James Caird (boat that Shackleton used).
Many of Arved's expeditions have taken place on water, such as his attempt to sail around North Pole on a traditional sailing boat (1991-1994). This boat, named Dagmar Aaen, is still used by Fuchs on his current expedition.
Travelling Solo to Svalbard this year - good news if you are planning to travel to the Arctic this year. There is no single supplement for the following MS Fram 2016 Spitsbergen Circumnavigation voyages. This deal is for bookings until the 29 February 2016 for the following departures.
20/07/2016, 27/07/2016, 03/08/2016, 10/08/2016, 17/08/2016
Increased VAT - At the end of the year, the Norwegian Government decided to increase VAT from 8 to 10% which translates to a small increase in the Hurtigruten voyages.
