If you like challenging terrain and want to explore a new area, then you should choose this hike. There will be a great variety in natural scenery from less vegetation around Bjordalsbu to green surroundings by the charming Iungsdalshytta. The last day includes a spectacular glacier walk at the sixth largest glacier in Norway, Hardangerjøkulen. Accommodation in staffed lodges and self-service cabins.

Important Information

In order to participate on tours with the Norwegian Trekking Association you need a membership. If you or someone in your group are not allready members, this can be done easily by contacting us. Membership is NOK 530 for individual membership, and is not included in the trip price. Reduced rates for family membership is available.

Day 1: Oslo to Bjordalsbu


Meeting point by the platform at Oslo Busterminal 20 minutes before departure. Look for the platform on the monitor. Departure 09.10 with Sogn og Fjordaneekspressen to the lodge Breistølen, arrival 14.30. Hike up to the lodge Bjordalsbu (1580 m), 4 hrs.

Bjordalsbu is a self service hut situated at 1580 meters above sea level, and a perfect starting point for treks in the area. 4 hours walk

Day 2: Bjordalsbu - Iungsdalen


Hike southwards through the valley Vesle Fødalen to the lodge Iungsdalshytta (1111 m), 6 hrs. Parts of the route quite rocky.

Iungsdalshytta is a serviced lodge just north of Hallingskarvet, where the Iung and Fø valleys meet. 6 hours walk

Day 3: Iungsdalen - Raggsteindalen


Hike through Grevskardet (ca. 1550 m), across Flyane to the lake Strandavatnet, by boat to Raggsteindalen Høyfjellstue (1000 m), 6 hrs.

Raggsteindalen tourist lodge has 80 beds and is known for its special and warm atmosphere and the good contact between the proprietors and the guests, and perhaps above all for its good cuisine. 6 hours walk

Day 4: Raggsteindalen - Geiteryggen


Hike westwards, passing several small lakes on the way to the lodge Geiterygghytta (1229 m), 5 hrs.

Geiterygghytta is staffed with 78 beds and lies at an elevation of 1224 m, midway in the Skarvheimen ranges west and northeast of Hallingskarvet. It was opened in 1914 and has become a vital node in an extensive route network, connecting routes from Hol, Aurland, Finse and Hallingskeid. 5 hours walk

Day 5: Geiteryggen - Finse


Hike across the mountain St. Pål (1695 m) with a breathtaking view to Hardangerjøkulen, descent to Finsehytta (1223 m), 5 hrs.

Finsehytta (staffed with 150 beds) is a magnificent starting point for southward on the Hardanger Pleateau or northward into Skarvheimen, the collective name for the ranges that lie north of the Bergen Railway Line and south of the Jotunheimen. The lodge lies midway between Hardangerjøkulen and Hallingskarvet. With trains almost to the door, the lodge is the base for ski touring until late May.

In summer, Finsehytta is a natural lodging for all who cycle the Rallarvegen as well as a starting point for the scenic trip down the Aurland Valley. 5 hours walk
