Mongolian Fly Fishing - Upper River Float
Mongolia is re-known for it's fly fishing and we endeavour to provide the best guided fly-fishing adventures for Taimen, Amur trout, and lenok from our private camps located in the Mongolian wilderness. Our access agreements allow us to offer a few guests each autumn nearly two hundred miles of blue ribbon fly-fishing water. Our highly experienced guides and camp staff are some of the best in the business. Limited to just 6 guests per trip, it is advised to book early.
With phenomenal numbers of large Amur trout and lenok, this may be some of the planet’s best trout fishing. But on this river, twenty-inch trout are only a bonus. Taimen are the object of desire for most anglers. Watching one of these giants absolutely hammer a big dry fly is a life altering experience.
Remarkably, the fishing improves every year. Last season we boated over two hundred taimen. Most taimen measured around three-feet in length, several came in well over forty inches, and the largest taimen measured just over fifty-five inches. Several anglers landed more than forty trout in a single day, all on a hopper.
Diligent stewardship helps keep the taimen and trout fishing this good. We’ve worked for over a decade to conserve these streams and formed a conservation partnership with six county governments and WWF to designate the entire river system as the world’s first Taimen Sanctuary. Protected specifically for taimen, these waters are the only in Mongolia designated “catch and release” for all anglers and “fly-fishing only” for all international anglers. The use of motorboats, construction of permanent tourism infrastructure, introduction of hatchery fish, commercial forestry and mining are now each prohibited within the two hundred mile sanctuary.
Stay in a different, pre-established cosy Ger camp every night.

This morning you will hop on a chartered Cessna Caravan for a 75 – 90 minute flight from the capital to the streamside airstrip. Anglers are usually on the river before lunch.
The taimen and trout fishing is a combination of drift and wade. Each day on the river, anglers and guides float directly from camp to fish fresh water. Upon arrival at the next downstream camp, the staff has your bags waiting, the bed made, the fire lit and dinner prepared. This “no drive” schedule maximizes fishing time, allows guests to explore a variety of water without shuttling, and keeps the river fresh. Every section of river is usually fished only a few days each per year.

Many guests have described the trout fishing as possibly the best in the world. Although that’s a difficult claim to substantiate, anglers should expect days deep into the double digits with 30 fish commonly boated in a single good day. Lenok (Brachymystax lenok) are found throughout Mongolia. They have bright red sides and a down-turned mouth. Amur trout (Brachymystax savinovi) are found only in a few Mongolian streams. This is a thick-bodied, golden fish with deep black spots and a very belligerent attitude. Amur trout are colored similarly to a brown trout and built like a cutthroat. The average size for both lenok and Amur trout is 18 – 22 inches with some reaching 25 inches or more. They are usually very willing to take a fly, making the enthusiastic trout and lenok a nice balance to the obstinate taimen.
Fishing for taimen is highly addictive. They are strong, ferocious, top-feeding predators. During the short 2010 season, we landed approximately two hundred taimen. Sizes ranged from twenty inches to over fifty-five inches. Most fish measured in the mid-30’s to low 40’s. The best 2010 single angler day was nine taimen netted. This lucky angler experienced the exception and not the rule. You will likely see many enormous fish during your stay and can typically expect several taimen shots a day. However, taimen fishing is not easy. Taimen are moody and difficult to land. One angler this past season watched helplessly as a big taimen ran straight down-stream with his reel burning and 9w line cutting the river’s surface. After this blistering run, the fish just turned and spit the fly out leaving the line and twenty yards of backing laying limp in the water. Taimen don’t require Herculean casting skills, but may demand steel-heading patience. Come prepared for a wonderful angling challenge, celebrate every fish caught and you’ll have the trip of a lifetime.
Accommodation
Each camp is rustic, but very comfortable, much like being on an African tented safari. The Ger camps on the upper river are a bit more luxurious with a central dining Ger and sleeping Gers, linens, and wood burning stoves. All of the camps have simple hot shower facilities.
The camps are designed as places to relax after a wonderful day on the river. Each camp reflects Mongolian traditions and is well integrated with the country’s natural surroundings. There are no generators or stereos, only the sounds of Mongolian wilderness and the stream.
