Day 1 Arrive Oslo

Arrive Oslo and make your own way to your hotel. Oslo has been Norway’s capital from more than 700 years. The history of Oslo dates back to the middle ages, and the first constructions date back to the year 1000. Oslo is located at the end of the Oslo fjord, and the city is surrounded by forest. In 2007, Oslo was classified by ‘readers digest’ as the worlds' second best city for appreciation of nature and respect of the environment.

We recommend visiting some of the Oslo highlights, including the Viking Ship, Kontiki & Fram museums, the Vigeland Sculpture Park and the Holmenkollen Ski Jump and Museum. A walk around the centre of town is well worth it to view the Parliament, the Castle, the Harbour area, as well as the new Oslo Opera designed by famous Norwegian architects ‘Snøhetta’, who also designed the beautiful Library in Alexandria (Egypt).

Included:
Oslo Card valid for 24 hours

The easiest way to appreciate Oslo is by the Oslo card – with the card you can benefit with free entrance to the museums and enjoy free public transportation and so much more…

It is classed as one of the finest train journeys in the world. At Myrdal you will change to the Flåm Railway, passing through wild and beautiful mountain scenery with waterfalls and steep mountain sides from a height of up to 900 metres and down to the Sognefjord.

There is no other adhesion railway in the world running on normal tracks that is so steep over a long distance. From Flåm you continue by boat on the Sognefjord, the world’s longest and deepest fjord, to Balestrand.

After breakfast you will have the opportunity to experience some of Norway’s largest glaciers. You will travel on the Fjærlandsfjord and experience one of the most beautiful fjord arms in Norway. Along the fjord, the old hamlets and farms are reminders of the struggle for existence in past times. A local bus will transport you to the Glacier Museum, where you will learn more about the glaciers and how the fjords were formed. Further, you will see two different extensions of the Jostedal Glacier; Supphellebreen and Bøyabreen glaciers (it is not possible to walk on the glaciers). In the afternoon you return by ferry to Balestrand.

There is also an opportunity to do a kayaking excursion out of Balestrand, which can be organised locally with the local adventure companies there.

From Norheimsund you will depart on a 3-hour cruise on the Hardangerfjord to Eidfjord. The Hardangerfjord is the second largest fjord in Norway, and famous for its fruit orchards. The contrast created by green hillsides, orchards in blossom and snow-clad mountains has inspired many, and among them the well known Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg with his famous composition «Spring».

In Eidfjord you will have 3 hours at leisure, which can be spent relaxing by the fjord, exploring the village or you can go on an optional sightseeing tour to Hardangervidda Nature Centre and the spectacular Vøringsfossen Waterfall, Norway’s highest waterfall (tickets for the excursion are available onboard).
