Day 2: Climb Mt. Fuji

After breakfast at the hotel, we start the day by heading off by local bus to Kawaguchi, a town that lies at the base of Mt. Fuji and start your walk along the oldest pilgrimage trail up the mountain. It is recommended that you leave your main luggage at the ryokan in Tokyo and carry a daypack with you.

It is a gradual climb over volcanic rocks and as you walk, you will experience the 'Japanese' style of hiking. Lots of greetings and comradeship.

At Fuji Yoshida, at the base of the mountain, we visit the 400 year old Sengen Jinja shrine, an atmospheric shrine dedicated to the official Shinto Goddess of Mt Fuji and the starting point of the traditional pilgrimage trail that we will follow up the mountain. Walking through the lush forests on the lower reaches of the mountain and past remains of what was once the main route up the mountain until the road was built to the fifth station we begin our hike to the summit.

Hiking at your own pace, the climb should take around 9 to 11 hours at a slow and easygoing speed.

At 3,776 metres high Mt. Fuji is Japan's tallest mountain and a national symbol. Snow-capped throughout most of the year, views from its majestic volcanic cone are breath-taking. You sleep on the mountain in rough mountain huts, ready for the summit bid the next day. These mountain huts are a great way to meet the locals, often late comers sleep on mattresses on the floor and there is limited private space. Communal sleeping and a hearty meal (usually curry and rice) await us as we spend an evening relaxing with the other climbers before an early night.

Sleeping at a higher altitude will help your body acclimatise to the thinner air at high altitudes. Approx. 2 hours

Day 3: Summit Mt. Fuji and watch sunrise of Japan

Today is an early start as you prepare for the summit bid - the hut starts to come alive before dawn as the local Pilgrims prepare for the final leg. This is also the best time for a clear view because during the early morning it is least likely to be shrouded in cloud. Weather permitting, you have time to hike the crater for an hour or two and check out the spectacular views of Mt Fuji's different sides. You also have the opportunity to send some post cards to your friends and family from the post office on the summit!

You can enjoy sunrise over Japan and then the adventurous fast down hill walk. With wobbly legs, you complete the trek and head back to Tokyo.

Be sure to enjoy a shiatsu massage on your return to Tokyo.

* When climbing the summit please make sure that you carry with you the following:
- warm clothing
- a torch/flashlight (and spare batteries)
- a rain coat
- some energy food and plenty of water
- a whistle.
