Xi’an is enclosed by a massive square 9 kilometre long city wall and has been the capital during several important Chinese dynasties, such as the Qin, Han and Tang, to mention a few. Xi’an is also the eastern terminus of the Silk Road trading routes connection China with the ‘west’ in ancient times. The most impressive and important reason to visit Xi’an, however, is the Terracotta Army, which was made during the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC) to protect the resting place, or mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China. The army consists of approx. 8000 soldiers, horses and chariots all facing east and all with different facial expressions. This is one of the most significant archaeological finds in history discovered only as late as 1972. The city of Xi’an itself is quite pleasant. The Muslim Quarter is the perfect place for a stroll and to find a street side restaurant serving dumplings, charcoal grilled Shish Kebabs or a great bowl of spicy noodle soup. An evening walk along the city walls joining couples and families, and watching the sunset through the mist is a great way to end a day in Xi’an.
