Shanghai
People seem to love Shanghai. The Bund, the Yuyuan Gardens the Old Street and markets, the colonial buildings and the abundance of restaurants, bars and nightlife.Shanghai is a true metropolis, and as with Beijing it is a place that is best seen in the company of a local. If you want a solid run through of Chinese history, archaeology, geology and culture then spend a half day at the impressive Shanghai Museum taking the headphones to guide you through the exhibitions. Shanghai is divided by the Huangpu River with the new area of Pudong with its modern high rises and slick architecture on the east side and old Shanghai with its colonial style buildings and the Bund on the west. An excellent afternoon outing that will startle you with amazement is a trip in a cabin car through the tunnel connecting the Bund to Pudong under the Huangpu River. Then take the elevator up to the 88th floor observation deck and skywalk of the 421 metre tall Jin Mao Tower (incl. Grand Hyatt Hotel) followed by an expensive cocktail at the 53rd floor piano and jazz bar.
